. . . was the main driver of one of the worst misconception related to Romanians. Just add that mistake made by the former neo-communist president of Romania, iliescu, when he (by foolish judgement or, worst, by mean purposes) – many said as a descendent of that nation - created a mass confusion between gypsies and Romanians (he publicly debate on the rights of gypsies to call themselves “rRom’s” or “Romani” - at that time the abbreviation used in international diplomacy for our country, Romania, was ROM – in my opinion, the main source of confusion).
But, let’s take it literary . . .
Gypsies are defined as “persons of nomadic habit of life, whatever their race or origin, but does not include members of an organised group of travelling showmen, or persons engaged in travelling circuses, travelling together as such.”
I will add something quite important to that definition. THIS IS THEIR WILL!!! This is how they want to live . . . i will come back on this later . . .
There is a misconception widely spread, according to which Gypsies are the most socially-disadvantaged minority group in Romania. Indeed, there is sort of a repulsion vis-a-vis to their style of living (small burglaries, cheating, coursing, bad habits, low level of personal hygiene . . ), but let’s face it: IS NOT ONLY ROMANIANS PEOPLE WHO FEEL THAT!!! Most of the Western countries feel the same or worst . . . (remember what Germans done during the WW2!!!).
Consider that all over Europe, Gypsies have been prosecuted and killed for centuries! In Romania, they manage to survive and to establish strong communities being accepted and TOLERATED VERY WELL by the majority Romanians!!! They came in waves from India, flooding entire Europe, but most of them founded here a nice place to live and to prosper. Part of them trying to integrate (in the sense that some of them were craftmen or so called “artists”) but most of them refused to register with the local communities or to enroll their children to public schools!!!
This is the most important notice to be made: THEY REFUSED TO SEND THEIR CHILDREN TO SCHOOLS . . . anyway, most of them. Those children believe in the way of life that they saw to their parents . . . making easy money by begging, cheating, misleading, singing . . . Which is the reason for this ??? It’s PURE LOGIC!!! They try to preserve their culture . . . their believes and their origins. This is also why they force their children to marry from early childhood (5 years old in some cases . . . ) with members of the same racial community.
In my opinion these are the most evident reasons for which the level of integration of Gypsies into society remains limited. In most of the countries, they usually remain on the margins of society, living in isolated ghetto-like settlements. Only a small fraction of Gypsies children graduate from secondary schools, although during the Communist regime, at least some of Eastern European governments forced all children to attend school, and provided them, like other citizens, with all required basics such as textbooks and the compulsory uniform.
Today, there is a variety of governmental and non-governmental programs for integration and social advancement, including a National Agency for Gypsies . . .
But, with all this, they say that they are discriminated on a large scale . . . Yes, but they want to feel that, they don’t want to change their style of living . . . they expect us to accept all misery and all problems that they create . . . sorry to tell, but this is not accepted!
I hate the way in which Western countries are looking on Romanians considering this topic. They consider that present Gypsies migration to their countries is our fault as they said that we are intolerant nation . . .
WRONG!!! TOTALLY WRONG!!!
This is only a misleading strategy! In this way they want to force Romania to RETAIN all Gypsies population as a solution for their problems . . . This is why they make public statement related to Romanians so called “intolerance”. This is why they spent big money on European programs aiming to settle down this population. According to this theory, at a certain moment all this migration will stop and Gypsies will have by then their own country: OUR COUNTRY!!! ROMANIA!
What are West Europeans forgetting? The following facts:
- this is happen because of their will and there are few outside forces to drive this migration (people in Romania became immune to their acts so, they make less money today in our country; new territories and new population are looking and considered as optimal for their way of living . . .);
- we have a multi-millennia history;
- we resisted on this land even the various and many conquerors passing;
- we are one of the most tolerant nation on the Continent, and based on that we have a natural advantage in dealing with such treats (one example to sustain this argument is the way in which their music has been integrated in the subculture of Romanian masses).
P.S. I start writing this post, after i saw a movie, “The Wolfman” – 2010. In this movie, Gypsies were speaking sort of Romanian language. Guys, don’t forget that our language is a direct descendant of LATIN language . . . this language has been spoken here since more than 2,000 years . . . Yours???
